Method of study
The MSc is delivered via what is
known as an executive mode. This model recognises that business people are
very busy and cannot usually afford the time to do a traditional part-time
programme which typically might take one day every week. Instead the
face-to-face contact time is compressed into just two weekends.
It is very important to realise that much of the learning goes on outside
these two weekends, and involves students in extensive study on their own and
usually at home. The ability to apply oneself to the discipline of this
method of learning is an important part of study at Masters level.
However, pure distance learning can be very lonely and there are high
drop-out rates. This executive model is very much more successful, and
when it is combined with the Webucate support system described below, results
are at least as good as for full-time on-campus modes of study. It is
vital therefore that you have regular (preferably daily) access to the Web and
email.
 |
Webucate allows the group of typically 25 participants to build a
learning e-community. The group dynamic created by the weekends and
nurtured by Webucate, is what keeps most students motivated to finish
their MSc on time. Webucate provides both intra-group competition
and mutual support, and whilst the Glamorgan tutors are active members of
your Webucate group, you will find that you learn as much from your
co-students. |
Almost all the group dynamic is 'inbox-driven', and whilst that at first
sight may seem like a burden, evidence has shown over the past 4 years that
group email is very valuable in motivating geographically distributed
participants. Group messages can still be viewed via your group's Webucate
home page, and you will visit this dedicated area to download useful files and
assignments. Group members can also post useful links and resources that
they discover themselves.
Webucate also provides a gallery of portraits of your fellow students and
tutors, and a database of research interests. It also provides direct
access into the university's comprehensive on-line database of research
journals. The university has an excellent on-campus support system called
Blackboard that is also populated with a huge wealth of resources, and it too
can be accessed through Webucate. The university is a member of the UK
Libraries Plus scheme. This allows you to visit other university libraries
that may be closer to your home than the Glamorgan campus.
Finally Webucate provides an ideal method of keeping in touch as an alumni
association ....... when you graduate !
